Chelsea play host to Aston Villa in the third round of the carabao cup tomorrow and coach Thomas Tuchel was speaking to the media earlier today on his team.
The Blues were without 2 players on Sunday when they faced Tottenham in the premier league as Christian Pulisic and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy were unavailable due to injury.
While no update on Christian Pulisic was given, Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Edouard Mendy won’t be available to face Aston Villa tomorrow as the Senegalese is in a race against time to face Man City on Saturday.
Tuchel on Mendy: “I think it’s possible. But it’s a race against time. Let’s see. I don’t know right now.”
Tuchel has also hinted on ringing the changes as his side face Villa tomorrow with some fringe players likely to get minutes.
Tuchel: “We will have some changes. I will not give you the lineup. We take the opportunity to give important minutes in an important competition to give guys some minutes.”
Tuchel: “When we play a competition, we play to win it. This is what we are. This is what the club demands. We are in a good place because we work hard and value the opportunities we have. The group is a strong at the moment.”
Thomas Tuchel also hinted on handing players like Saúl Niguez, Timo Werner and Ruben Loftus-Cheeck opportunities to play tomorrow as all 3 players have not gotten enough game time this season.
Tuchel on Saúl: “Of course we want to give Saul some minutes. We want to give more players some competitive minutes. To use the opportunity to push some guys and to trust them in a competitive cup match like tomorrow.”
Tuchel on Loftus-Cheeck: “We have him some minutes vs Zenit. That was not a gift, he deserved. We trust him. He adapts and accepts his situation. What he makes out of the situation. Tomorrow is a big chance.”
Tuchel on Werner: “We know he can be more dangerous, more attacking threat. The stuff you don’t see, he’s more relaxed, more fluid in movements, more confidence in his movement. We hope he can show it tomorrow.”
Chelsea lost at this stage to Tottenham last season and the Blues would be looking to avoid a repeat this time around.
