Manchester United suffered an early and shock exit in the 3rd round of the carabao cup after losing 1-0 at home to West Ham last night.
The Hammers took the lead early in the game through Manuel Lanzini and held on till the end to make Man United suffer their first early exit in the competition under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer speaking after the match though admitted that his side started slowly but he was pretty much happy with his player’s response to going a goal down.
Solskjaer: “We started slowly, they got the goal and after that I thought we played well for long long periods.”
Solskjaer however admitted that his team’s quest to find an equalizer left them open at the back at the latter stages
Solskjaer: “A poor start, then some good bits, and towards the end when we went gung-ho we opened ourselves up and they could have scored a few more”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also of the opinion that Man Utd should have had a penalty for a tuck on Jesse Lingard in the first half and the manager openly expressed his displeasure with the referee’s decision.
“I’d rather not say too much but it’s a penalty again on Jesse [Lingard]”
Despite Manchester United being unable to break down the West Ham defense, Solskjaer is quite impressed and he was in defense of his players especially those who are regularly on the fringes.
Solskjaer: “We ended up with 27 shots, which is quite remarkable for a team that’s not really been working and preparing too much. Maybe you can see some players [who needed] minutes, but that’s natural.”
Solskjaer: “We’re not great when we play against a low block and just sling crosses in because we’re not that type of team. We didn’t have those types of players.”
Solskjaer: “The attitude when we lose the ball, we run back, I cannot fault any single player out there.”
Solskjaer: “We need to think about the bigger picture and today we made that decision [to play fringe players] and maybe some of them will come out stronger for it.”
Solskjaer: “This competition is one to give minutes for the ones who need it. Of course, everyone wants to go through, but Saturday morning we should be ready”
Man Utd face Aston Villa in premier league on Saturday and the Red devils would be looking to bounce back in order to maintain their brilliant record in the league.
