Chelsea midfielder Saúl Niguez has named former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres as his “biggest idol” while growing up. This was revealed by the new Chelsea man while speaking to Fabrizio Romano in his recent Twitch interview.
Torres came through the Atletico Madrid system just like Saul before moving to the Premier League to join Liverpool in 2007, a move Saúl says he defended as a younger player on Twitter.
Fernando Torres moved from Liverpool to Chelsea in 2011 and left in 2015 to join AC Milan. Though, Torres did not quite reach the heights expected of him at Chelsea, he’s forever remembered and cherished for the semi-final goal against Barcelona in 2012 at the camp nou. A goal that proved pivotal as Chelsea eventually won their first ever champions league that year.
Fernando Torres returned to Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal in 2016 and according to Saúl, the feeling of meeting Torres was ‘incredible’ and he could not talk to him. Saúl also said he’s now ‘big friends’ with the 2012 champions league winner.
Saúl also opened up about speaking to Fernando Torres about moving to Chelsea.
Saul also admires Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta and refers to him as a “true captain” and a “great person”.
Azpilicueta, Torres and Saúl’s former Atlético Madrid teammate Felipe Luis are the 3 Chelsea and ex-Chelsea players Saúl named in his dream xi of players he’s ever played with.
Saul Niguez’s dream XI of players he has played with includes: Jan Oblak; Cesar Azpilicueta, Sergio Ramos, Diego Godin, Filipe Luis; Sergio Busquets, Koke, Andres Iniesta; David Villa, Fernando Torres, David Silva
