Chelsea officially announces the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan as the UEFA Champions League winners paid a whopping sum of £98 million to acquire the services of the Belgian striker, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
Lukaku’s return to the bridge following several spells across Europe is marked with huge expectations, as the 28 year old Belgian was brought in to offer solution to Chelsea’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal.
Following Chelsea’s official confirmation of signing Lukaku, Chelsea’s director Marina Granovskaia couldn’t hide her excitement as she believes Lukaku is one of the best strikers in the world.
She said: “Romelu is quite simply one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers. We are absolutely delighted to be bringing him back to the club he loves, and are excited to be adding his talent to our Champions League-winning squad.”
“We are of course looking to build on last season’s success, and Lukaku will play a big role in achieving our targets. I’m sure all Chelsea fans will join me in saying welcome home, Romelu!”
Romelu also couldn’t hide his ecstaticism after the former Nerazzurri striker signed a five year deal on his return to the bridge.
He said: “I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club,’ said Lukaku. ‘It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more maturity.
“The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.
“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together.
“Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success.”
Despite Chelsea’s success in the just concluded season, they (Chelsea) were found lacking in front of goal as the club’s striker Timo Werner failed to convert chances on several occasions. This has led to Chelsea losing faith in the German and looking to sign prolific goalscorers in which they seem to have found in Romelu Lukaku.
Belgium’s boss Roberto Martinez also gave his verdict on Lukaku’s move to Chelsea. Martinez believes Chelsea is a club close to Lukaku’s heart and he believes Lukaku is the best player Chelsea can sign to further strengthen the club, following the Blues’ recent UEFA Champions League victory.
“Chelsea is a club that is very close to Lukaku’s heart. I think his way of looking at it is that he wants to win titles. After Chelsea on the Champions League, he is the perfect player to bring the squad forward and make them better.”
