Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League in the just concluded 2020/2021 campaign and are looking to bolster their squad the more ahead of the upcoming 2021/2022 season.
Chelsea have already managed to acquire the signature of Marcus Bettinelli on a free transfer from Fulham. After signing a two-year contract with The Shed end club, Bettinelli took his time to explain how ecstatic he is to be signing for Chelsea.
He says,”It’s always been a special club. I know the area very well so it’s been a dream of mine to come over to this side and it’s finally happened. There were some talks a few years ago when I was a bit younger and for whatever reason that didn’t come about but I’m here now.
“I’m really excited to be involved and looking forward to trying to impress and help the team as much as I can.”
Chelsea don’t plan to end their activity in the transfer market after signing Bettinelli as they look forward to signing a Striker, a Midfielder and a Defender.
Chelsea’s pursuit of a defender seems to be solved as Jules Kounde has agreed personal terms with Chelsea and all Chelsea have to do is to negotiate his transfer fee with Sevilla.
This approach however has resulted in questioning from Chelsea legend Frank Lebouef.
Frank Lebouef who signed for Chelsea from Strasbourg doesn’t believe that Jules Kounde is good enough to cement a regular place at Chelsea.
Frank Lebouef speaking on ESPN questioned how he fits into Chelsea’s current system under the management of German manager Thomas Tuchel.
He said: “They have lots of players: (Andreas) Christensen, Zouma, (Reece) James, (Cesar) Azpilicueta, Emerson, (Ben) Chilwell, and now maybe Kounde.
“Christensen had a fantastic Euro. Thiago Silva is the skipper of that team.
“You have Azpilicueta who does the job. Nobody deserves to be on the bench at the back of this Chelsea team.
“They did fantastically last season. Do you think it’s normal to put Thiago Silva or Christensen on the bench? I don’t think so.”
Frank Lebouef was particularly concerned with Antonio Rudiger as he believes that Kounde doesn’t have what it takes to displace Rudiger in the pecking order.
“You want to put Rudiger on the bench? Impossible. The guy had a fantastic season. We never thought he would come back at that level.”
Rudiger fought his way back to Chelsea’s starting line-up following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel who rates his fellow German highly. Rudiger who fell down the pecking order under the management of Frank Lampard was very vital in Chelsea’s road to UCL victory.
His heroic tackle against Phil Foden in the final kept Chelsea in the game and Chelsea eventually went on to win the trophy, thanks to Kai Havertz’ shrewdness in front of goal after receiving a well timed pass from Mason Mount.
Rudiger’s contract runs out next June and there is no optimism as to if he will renew his contract. With Chelsea unsure about Rudiger’s contract situation, a move for Kounde could well be on the cards.
