Chelsea host Aston Villa in the Carabao cup tonight and both sides would be looking for a win in order to qualify for the fourth round.
It will be the second time both sides are meeting this season after having played each other in the premier league about a couple of weeks ago. Chelsea were 3-0 winners on the night courtesy of a Romelu Lukaku double and a goal from Matteo Kovacic.
Both sides would be heading into this one high on confidence on the back of 3-0 victories respectively.
Chelsea were emphatic away from home on Sunday as they beat city rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby with Thiago Silva, N’golo Kanté and Antonio Rudiger scoring a goal each.
Aston Villa were also impressive during the weekend as they overpowered Everton 3-0 at Villa Park courtesy of a Matty Cash goal and a Lucas Digne own goal which which preceded a Leon Bailey strike that put the icing on the cake for the Villans.
Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel has hinted on ringing the changes to the team that beat Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Hence a lot of changes should be expected.
Tuchel mentioned Timo Werner, Saúl Niguez and Ruben Loftus-Cheeck in his press conference yesterday as players deserving of first team chances.
In terms of injuries, Chelsea are confirmed to be without Edouard Mendy for the clash. Meanwhile, no update was provided for Christian Pulisic who has been out for a couple of weeks already but the American is not expected to start as no pictures of him training surfaced in Chelsea’s last training session.
Dean Smith meanwhile will be looking have several of his key players available the clash Matty Cash, Matt Targett and Leon Bailey sustained knocks during the game against Everton at the weekend, while Scottish midfielder John McGinn was taken off against the Toffees as a concussion precaution. Former Chelsea forward Bertrand Traore is also in line to face his former club at Stanford Bridge.
