Arsenal training match vs Aston Villa: Scoreline, Aubameyang brace, debuts, defensive concerns

The start of the new campaign has been delayed by a month because of the coronavirus pandemic which caused the 2019/20 season to finish in July.

But the Gunners’ season didn’t finish until August 1 when they beat Chelsea to lift the FA Cup trophy at Wembley Stadium and were back in action last weekend in the Community Shield.

A penalty shoot-out win over the reigning Premier League champions did wonders for morale, but more importantly, it allowed Mikel Arteta to give minutes to several members of his first-team squad.

And ahead of the new season, clubs up and down the country have been allowed to organise friendly matches, to increase the fitness levels despite it being the international break.

Arsenal were in action at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, facing off against fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.

The north London outfit have yet to reveal any details of the friendly match, but some notes have emerged.

According to PA Sports’ Mark Mann-Bryans, the Gunners suffered a 3-2 defeat.

Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang helped himself to a brace, but there could be some defensive concerns for Arteta to address ahead of next weekend.

Earlier in the week, Arsenal team played a behind closed doors friendly against fellow London team Queens Park Rangers and shipped three goals.

And Arteta won’t want his side to suffer defensively when the season starts.

Willian got his first run-out in an Arsenal shirt, while Mesut Ozil also featured.

Dani Ceballos also made an appearance, less than 24 hours after his return from Real Madrid on another season-long loan was confirmed.
