Flashback to 2014, Manchester United announced the signing of Argentine winger, Angel Di Maria on a five year deal worth £59.7 million. one of the most expensive transfers of all time and the highest fee ever paid by a British club at the time.
Di Maria inherited the number 7 shirt previously worn by iconic players like Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best.
Things eventually didn’t go as planned for the Argentine at Old Trafford as he suffered a dip in form that saw him score just 3 goals in 27 appearances for the Red Devils and the player whom before joining Man Utd had an illustrious and trophy laden career at Real Madrid was termed a flop in England. According to popular opinion at the time, Di Maria was the worst signing of the season and this was a precipitate to him leaving for PSG after just one season of playing English football.
Angel Di Maria has enjoyed a new lease of life in Paris as he’s been a major act in PSG’s Ligue 1 dominance and their consistent quest for a champions league trophy.
Alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Di Maria has put his Old Trafford nightmare behind him as the 33 year old has become of the darlings of the Parc Des Princes and with the arrival of compatriot Lionel Messi this summer, the PSG players would fancy their chances of making history by winning their first champions league trophy in May 2022.
Angel Di Maria in an interview with TyCSports has opened up on the reason behind his failure at Manchester United. According to popular belief, Di Maria struggled because he inherited the number 7 shirt, a jersey number which was seen as cursed by many fans as Man Utd before Di Maria’s arrival struggled to find a worthy successor after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Angel Di Maria doesn’t think so as he’s shared a completely different opinion as to why he struggled in Manchester.
“I didn’t give a f*** about the Manchester United No.7. My problem at Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst of my career.”
“I would score, assist, and the next day he [Van Gaal] would show me my misplaced passes. He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him
Quite strong and bold allegations by Angel Di Maria as he was undoubtedly poor during his brief spell at Manchester United. He has been able to prove himself at Paris Saint Germain nonetheless.
