Following a disappointing campaign from Timo Werner, Chelsea started hunting for strikers as they were linked with strikers like Erling Haaland, Romelu Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic to mention a few.
However, Chelsea are on the brink of signing Inter Milan’s striker Romelu Lukaku as the Nerazzurri are poised to accept Chelsea’s improved €110m bid after they had previously rejected their (Chelsea’s) offer.
Despite Timo Werner’s disappointing performance in the just concluded campaign, Werner led Chelsea to their second UEFA Champions League title in nine years.
Upon signing for Chelsea back in the summer of 2020, Timo Werner stated that he came to Chelsea to win titles and winning the UEFA Champions League is one of the reasons he decided to sign for Chelsea.
He said: “I came here to win titles,”
“Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012, but have only made it to the semi-final once since then. However, Werner believes they have a ‘good chance’ of winning it this season.
“We have a big squad of good players… I think with this we have to have the goal to go very far in this competition.
“We are not here to say ‘we will get in the next round and we will see’. We are here to win the Champions League.
“This year is a good chance because everybody in the competition has a lot of games, and every team has to think about how they can manage it, who they can play, how many games they can play consecutively.
“For me, I think we have a good chance this year, but also in the next years… We are in a good way, we are learning from each other. We have a good chance to go very far in this competition.”
After winning the UEFA Champions League in his debut season, Timo Werner has set a new target for the UEFA Champions League defending champions as he claims that he wants to win the English Premier League in the upcoming season at Chelsea.
Despite winning the UEFA Champions League last season, Chelsea had a bittersweet experience in the Premier League as they recorded a series of disappointments under the management of Frank Lampard which led to him being sacked.
However, sacking Frank Lampard wasn’t enough for Chelsea to challenge for the League following the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea fell behind to League winners Manchester City with a whooping 19 point difference.
Timo Werner who scored just six league goals last season despite accumulating an xG (expected goals) tally of 13.43 has however made it his mission to win the Premier League for Chelsea in the upcoming season.
“We want to win a title; it doesn’t matter which one”, Werner told the club’s website.
“The best thing would be the Champions League again, but also the Premier League is a big target. One of those titles is our target.
“For me individually it is to score maybe a little bit more than last year, which was not the best thing, but to keep going and to help the team as much as I can with assists and scoring.”
