Following the announcement of Lionel Messi’s shock exit from Barcelona, several clubs have been in contact with the six time ballon d’or winner with clubs like Chelsea, Paris Saint Germain, Manchester United and Manchester City all getting linked to the former Barcelona star.
Lionel Messi agreed to renew his contract with Barcelona, but La Liga financial embargo forced the Spanish giants (Barcelona) to part ways with the highly rated Argentine, putting an end to his 21 year stay at the club.
As a result of this, several clubs are ready to pounce on the opportunity to sign Lionel Messi following the statement released by the club.
It reads,”Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalised due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish La Liga regulations).
“Given this situation, Lionel Messi will not continue linked to FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of both the player and the club cannot finally be fulfilled.”
Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta took his time to heap praises on the departing forward.
“Barca would like to thank with all its heart the player’s contribution to the enhancement of the institution and wishes him the best in his personal and professional life.”
“The reason why we have decided that we have to get to this point is because of the economical situation of the club and that an investment of that volume with the contract of Leo Messi was risky.
“A lot of aspects had to be negotiated: Leo’s contract needed to be compatible with fair play, it needed to be of a certain duration, because he’s the best player in the world and he has other offers of course.”
Laporta also expressed his thoughts on the next step Messi might take.
“I don’t want to generate false hope, during the course of negotiations, we knew that Messi had other offers and there was a time limit both for us and Messi.
“Messi also needs to be given time, if fair play continues to be rigid, the player also needs some time to see what he’ll do, evaluate his situation and look at other options.”
